First question is it confirmed as a possum. This is a cause for concern for many residents because possums being nocturnal become active while most of us are trying to sleep. A possum is a large animal and it has no qualms relieving. If the pesky marsupial is living in your attic roof or any other high spot in your home then you need to block its access.

Not sure if you re talking about inside or outside your roof but inside your roof possums mostly run around at dawn dusk maybe a couple of other times during the night more on rainy nights if they don t want to go out when doing so they sound like an elephant herd of elephants. The usual signs of having possums in the roof are heavy bangs on the ceiling or roof at night as they run around hissing or coughing noises and stains or a strong ammonia smell caused by their urine. It needs to have a stopper or collar of some sort on one end otherwise the possums will just push it along with their nose until it rests against the cable terminal and this may allow the possum to leap past it onto the roof. The footprints will also tell you whether it is a single possum or you are dealing with a family of possums.

A brown stain around an entry or exit is also an indicator that the entrance is being used. Possums will not usually run in the roof space. In fact our clients often compare a possum moving inside the roof to that of an elephant thumping around. Other tell tale signs that a possum is living in your roof can be stains on a ceiling or drip marks down your walls caused by urine. Short lengths of pipe they will jump over when running. If you ve ever had a possum living above your ceiling you know they can be quite noisy fighting screeching and running along the roof.
